The talks between Anthony Joshua and the two-time world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, have fizzled out. But what happened exactly, and what does this mean for Joshua in the future? Keep reading to know more.
In September 2022, Tyson Fury expressed his desire to fight Anthony Joshua through social media. Joshua agreed and asked him to contact his agency (258 MGT) to settle the fight. He also mentioned that he would be ready for December.
Fury and Joshua’s fight was very anticipated by many fans since 2020 to the point that it was nicknamed the “Battle of Britain.” Yet, many people thought it would not happen since Fury had before announced his retirement during his birthday in August.
The negotiations between Fury and Joshua’s teams seemed to be going well. 258 MGT reported on its Twitter account that the fight would likely occur on December 3rd, raising the excitement of many fans who are looking for latest sports betting odds.
Unfortunately, in October. Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, announced that the fight would not occur due to issues during the negotiation for the encounter.
According to Hearn, the contract was still being prepared when Fury announced a 48-hour deadline for Joshua’s team to sign the contract. Joshua’s team wasn’t satisfied yet with the actual contract and didn’t sign in, causing Fury to call off the fight.
Yet, the story didn’t end there, since Fury announced the next day that the fight with Joshua could still happen if he signed the contract immediately. Unfortunately, since both teams could not agree on the contract terms, the fight was called off by Joshua’s team.
What Happens Now To Anthony Joshua?
2022 hasn’t been a good year for Anthony Joshua. The former champion recently lost for the second time in a row against now-champion Oleksandr Usyk during their rematch in Saudi Arabia. AJ has also been criticized for his conduct after the end of its second fight with Usyk.
After announcing the results, Joshua grabbed two of Usyk’s belts, threw them out of the ring, and stormed off. After this, he returned, gave a speech and exited the ring to finish the night fighting a bystander who criticized his poor attitude.
Although the cancellation of the fight with Fury is not Joshua’s fault, it certainly doesn’t help the bad run he has had this year. It would have been quite beneficial for him to fight a veteran like Fury since it would allow him to finish the year well.
Fury has recently mentioned that, although he doesn’t discredit the achievements of Joshua as a boxer, he does question his commitment to the British public. Fury has repeatedly mentioned that he is no longer interested in fighting Joshua, and the fight on December 3rd will now be against Derek Chisora.
What Brings The Future For Anthony Joshua?
While this year hasn’t been the best for Joshua, it seems the next year will be better. More recently, it has been confirmed that the former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr will be Joshua’s new trainer the following year.
Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Joshua, mentioned that there had been talks for a future fight between Dillian Whyte and Joshua at the beginning of the following year.
Hearn also mentioned that there are talks for a fight between Deontay Wilder and Joshua after Wilder finishes his fight for the WBC title with Andy Ruiz. Interestingly, Ruiz met up with Joshua during the fight between Dmitry Bivol and Gilberto Ramírez. During the said fight, Ruiz proposed to Joshua that they have a third fight.
However, like all the other fights, this third fight still needs to be confirmed, so we’ll have to wait and see if Joshua can recover from his losing streak in 2023.
