Swiss Summit Adventure: The Ten Most Amazing Switzerland Mountains To Visit

It is impossible to describe Switzerland without its mountains. They occupy a third of the country’s territory and have assumed and still assume significant importance both from a historical and a geopolitical point of view.

The economic impact of Switzerland’s mountains is also very significant. Just think that a large part of Switzerland’s tourism occurs precisely in the Alpine area.

On the other hand, the Confederation has more than one reason to be proud. It boasts the highest concentration of peaks in Europe. The mountains in Switzerland are particularly fascinating as numerous peaks rise above the 4,000m mark. There are 48 4000m peaks that numerous hikers and mountaineers can climb in the summer months.

But also, slightly lower peaks have idyllic routes and beautiful views. Discover 10 of the fascinating mountains in Switzerland here.

1. Mount Tamaro

At 1,960m, Monte Tamaro is one of the rather low peaks on this list. Nevertheless, it is also known as a panoramic mountain and offers exceptionally beautiful views of the region above Rivera.

Thanks to its location in the Swiss canton of Kessin, it is a popular destination where you can hike up some beautiful paths to the summit.

The routes are very easy and particularly worthwhile for mountain bikers, as there are several mountain bike trails on the mountain itself.

If you don’t have a mountain bike and don’t want to walk down, you can opt for the summer toboggan run on Monte Tamaro.

2. The Stanier Horn

The Stanserhorn is also rather low but offers exceptionally beautiful views.  In the middle of the Uri Alps, the 1,898m high panoramic mountain towers into the sky and offers hikers a great summit panorama.

If you want, you can make yourself comfortable in the revolving restaurant at the summit and enjoy the food there while you get to see the mountain world on tour.

The indescribably beautiful location with the wide summit panorama is ideal for both hikers and paraglider pilots. These can start at the summit and fly over the mountains into the valley.

The Finsteraarhorn in the Bernese Oberland rises towards the sky like a pyramid. With a height of 4,274m, it is the highest mountain in the canton of Bern and the tallest mountain in the Bernese Alps.

This is also why the ascent is an alpine highlight and is rewarded with an incredibly beautiful panorama at the summit.

Those who do not have mountaineering skills can also view the beautiful mountain from afar. The Finsteraarhorn looks particularly beautiful from the opposite Bachalpsee, which is reflected in good weather.

4. The Dufourspitze

The glacier-covered Dufourspitze in Valais is the highest mountain in Switzerland at 4,634m.  Here, where rock meets bare ice and even the most experienced mountaineers have to curse now and then, you can go on very beautiful mountain tours over glaciers to the roof of Switzerland.

After the strenuous ascent to the summit, you will be rewarded with a view straight out of a picture book. This ranges from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps.

The Dufourspitze is the highest mountain in Switzerland. At 4634 meters, this mountain is one of the “Seven Second Summits” – the seven second highest mountains on each continent.

5. The Matterhorn

Anyone who finds out about Switzerland’s mountains will be unable to avoid this name.  Because the Matterhorn not only has an exciting climbing history of offering but, thanks to its unique shape, is also a wonderful photo motif.

Therefore, it attracts hundreds of thousands of hikers, mountaineers, and tourists yearly, but experienced mountaineers can only climb it.

Although it is one of the highest mountains in the Alps at 14,692 feet, the Matterhorn is most famous for its iconic symbolized shape, becoming a highly recognizable mountaineering symbol.

The first attempt to summit the Matterhorn was highly documented in 1865 when it resulted in the disastrous fall of four mountain climbers. The highest of the Matterhorn’s four peaks was successfully climbed in 1962.

Matterhorn has been separated from the Swiss federal inventory of natural monuments since 1983. The steep climbs bring some dangers with them. Rockfalls, avalanches, and falls should not be ignored here.

Probably the most photographed mountain in Switzerland: the 4478 meters high Matterhorn. As popular as the Matterhorn is with tourists, you must see it realistically as a Swiss.

And not just on the Toblerone packaging. To admire the Matterhorn, the Breithorn, and the Monta Rosa massif, a hike to Höhbalmen in Valais is worthwhile.

7. The Eiger

The infamous north face of the Eiger. Because the north face, which is about 1,800 meters high, rises like a massive rock and can be seen from a distance.

Whether spectacular attempts at ascent or successful ascents, it regularly occurs in alpinism history that whoever stands at the foot of the north face feels the might of this huge face.

But the summit is not only reached via the north face. Some other, somewhat easier routes also lead over the steep ascents to the Eiger, one of the three peaks of the most famous triumvirate in the Alps.

8. The Säntis

If a mountain can be described as a panoramic mountain, it is the Säntis in the Alpstein.

You can see six different countries from the summit when the weather is good. This includes Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France, and Italy.

Nevertheless, everyone fascinated by the mountains should stand on the summit with such a beautiful panorama at least once. If you don’t want to use the cable car, you can also reach the highest point via an easy hiking trail.

The Appenzeller Berg is not as high as the other mountains on this list (2501.9 meters). But it is so distinctive that you can see it from afar. And from the summit, you can see over six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein, France, and Italy.

It is best to go to the Schwägalp. From there, you take the Säntisbahn to the summit and marvel at the view of the Appenzellerland.

Säntis is one of the best-known mountains in Switzerland. We are in the northeastern part of the Confederation, on the border of the two semi-cantons of Appenzell ( Internal and External ) and the Canton of St. Gallen.

10. The Weisshorn

Sharp, lofty peaks, glaciers, and steep slopes are typically images that come to mind when one thinks of the mountains in Switzerland. As well as the Weisshorn in the Valais Alps is subject to all of these stereotypes.

As the highest peak in the Weisshorn Group, it not only has some of the most scenic tours in Valais to offer but also looks super fascinating.

Thanks to its pyramid-like shape, the Weisshorn is even considered by some to be the most beautiful mountain in the Alps. Anyone who has ever stood at the summit can confirm this.

The Weisshorn peak is 4,505 m above sea level. It is one of the most remarkable 4000m peaks in the Alps.

Although the Weisshorn cannot finish with the Matterhorn in terms of its beauty, it creates an even pyramid with three sharp edge-shaped ridges that reach over the Matterhorn.

It could therefore be called the most beautiful mountain in the series of Alps, but it marks an even greater challenge for mountaineers. The very first ascent of the Weisshorn took place in August 1861.

Even the center of central Switzerland, the Älggialp, the swiss mountains, and the swiss national park can be found on a mountain, also the eastern alps, south ridge, and lake geneva; it is not for nothing that the Matterhorn and the Jungfraujoch are world-famous.
