1. Significance of Long Point Provincial Park & Lake Erie

1.1 Long Point Provincial Park

The Long Point Provincial Park is one of the most famous provincial parks located on the northwestern shores of Lake Erie, situated near Port Rowan of Ontario,  Canada. The Long Point Provincial Park is part of a spit of sandy land known as the Long Point that comes out into the lake.

The  Park covers mainly part of the area of The Long Point Biosphere Reserve, which is designated as a UNESCO(The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Biosphere Reserve because of its biological significance.

The Long Point Provincial Park is one of the most popular parks and is famous for its migrating birds, especially during the spring season, which is one of the ways to attract thousands of birdwatchers from all over the world. There have been about 340 different species recorded in the Long Point Provincial Park. Species such as many different snakes and turtles are common sights during the summertime.

The park is located within the most significant area of the core range of Fowler’s toad Anaxyrus fowleri. This unique species of toad is known to be a threatened species within Ontario in Canada. This was specifically announced by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife Species based in Canada.

There are two parts of The Long Point Provincial Park. They are the “Old Park,” which is also known as the Cottonwood Campground. The Cottonwood Campground is a small chunk of land surrounded by cottages with about eighty to ninety campsites. The campground has recently been developed with comfort stations such as washrooms and showers.

The other part of the park is called the “new park,” which has beautiful Turtle Dunes Campgrounds, Monarch’s Rest, Firefly, a boat launch for tourists, and many good scenarios of the Long Point Bay and marshes.

The “new park” is larger and covers more area than the old park section, about a kilometre away from the down Long Point Provincial Park. In total, Long Point Provincial Park has 256 campsites, including 78 electrical sites located in Firefly Campground. The beach is easily accessible from all four campsites or campgrounds.

1.2 Lake Erie

Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes located in Canada, North America. It is the fourth-largest lake globally by surface area and the eleventh-largest by volume.
